Balcony plants for small containers: Our easy-care favorites

Little space, lots of green: These 5 compact balcony plants survive in any small container

Even a small balcony needs to be beautifully planted! We know five plants that look great even in small pots or balcony boxes and are content with very little space.

Plants that can be used in small pots are becoming increasingly popular – after all, they fit into any garden and can even find a place on even the narrowest balcony. And above all: Despite being in a pot, the plants lose none of their charm, but rather enchant with their opulent flowers.

These plants also grow in small pots

Even if there is little space, the balcony doesn’t have to look barren. These plants also feel comfortable in small pots and really blossom there:

#1 Geraniums

Geraniums are considered a classic on the balcony – they enchant with their beautiful flowers and are also relatively easy to care for. The only important thing is that the pot on the balcony is always twice as big as the container the geranium was in when you bought it – and yes, that’s still pretty small! The planter should also offer good water drainage.

#2 Rosemary

Herbs also look nice in small pots – especially rosemary, which can also be used in many ways in the kitchen. Rosemary grows best alone in a pot and in intense sun. A small terracotta pot is particularly suitable for the rosemary. Clay regulates the distribution of water and heat. Stones at the bottom of the pot also ensure that the water can drain away easily.

#3 Oleander

Not only the geranium, but also the oleander brings color to the balcony and radiates it Mediterranean flairif you cultivate it as a potted plant in a sunny, warm place. However, since the oleander is very vigorous, it must be repotted into a slightly larger container year after year. For this reason it is only suitable for a small balcony in the first few years.

#4 Kalanchoe

The Kalanchoe is always popular on small balconies and spreads a really good mood with its colorful flowers and special leaves. Another reason why the Kalanchoe is so popular: The thick-leaf plant is absolutely easy to care for and the mini version fits into even the smallest pot.

#5 Dwarf Rhododendron

The rhododendron is only suitable for large balconies, if not even gardens? Well, that’s not entirely true – because there are also small versions of the popular plant: The dwarf rhododendron delights with its lush flowers, but only grows up to 100 centimeters high.
